Guidance is an essential aspect of the educational experience for all children. It is through the guidance program and counseling relationship that students are helped to interpret and integrate the world in which they live. The guidance program functions as a liaison capacity between administrators, teachers, parents, students and the community. The program goals are:

o       To increase communication with parents
o       To promote a clearer understanding of school environment
o       To promote understanding of educational requirements
o       To promote school success skills
o       To provide career/education awareness and planning
o       To promote social/personal development
o       To increase community involvement
o       To provide counseling services



Ninth Grade Night

The guidance department hosted an evening program to ninth grade students/parents on the topic of “Welcome Freshmen/Transition to High School.” Information presented by school counselors Kelly Brouthers and Patricia Coppola included an overview of graduation requirements, grading policy, Wilson Tech, NCAA, college testing and the importance of joining clubs/community service. The Career Technology Education (CTE) department set up displays in the common area and spoke to families and students entering the auditorium. Christine LoFrese, director of CTE, began the evening with information regarding the CTE department.


Financial Aid Night

Financial Aid Night was hosted at Smithtown High West on Oct. 24. Administrator for Guidance and Related Student Services Kevin Colon and school counselors Diane Giannico and Karen Schmalz welcomed approximately 200 parents from the Smithtown High School East and West communities. Presenter Amy Thompson, director of financial aid at St. Joseph’s College, discussed the FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and the application process. She also discussed how the financial aid package is determined and summarized other financial options. For more information regarding the FAFSA form visit


College Testing

Administrator for guidance and related student services Kevin Colon, with the assistance of school counselors Patricia Coppola and Isabella Favre, presented an evening student/parent workshop to sophomores and juniors on College Admissions Testing on Oct. 3. The program reviewed in the PSAT, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, ACT and Advanced Placement exams. Tom Elhers of Method Test Prep shared the key elements of the test prep resource. Students can activate the online tutorial by accessing their Castle Learning account and clicking onto the SAT/ACT tab. Kristen Capezza of Adelphi University discussed how college testing is used for college admissions and scholarships. She reviewed the advantages and disadvantages of applying to test optional schools.

The feedback demonstrated appreciation of the district’s purchase of this tool to help students tackle one aspect of college admissions and also, their appreciation for understanding how college testing relates to college admissions. The end of the presentation was followed by a question and answer session where parents asked pertinent questions related to college testing exams and college admissions.


Guidance Night for Seniors 

Administrator for guidance and related student services Kevin Colon, along with high school counselors Kate Baker Sara Safranek and Dorothy Caputo, presented an evening workshop to seniors and their parents on “The College Application Process” on Sept. 19 in the High School West auditorium.

The program outlined the college application procedures. Helpful hints were shared about applying to college, utilizing Naviance and scholarship information. In addition to this evening guidance program, counselors visited all seniors in their social studies classes.
